Marine capstans/capstan anchor winch refer to the capstan with a warping head installed on deck of a ship mainly used for ship anchoring, mooring, weights pulling and so on. According to power type, there are mainly electric marine capstan, hydraulic marine capstan, manual marine capstan, pneumatic marine capstan and gas powered capstan winch.

According to material of the marine capstan, there are cast iron galvanized capstan, stainless steel capstan, aluminum capstan and bronze capstan; according to shaft center line orientation, there are vertical marine capstan and horizontal marine capstan, vertical capstan is installed on deck with part of the capstan above the deck and other parts are below the deck, for example, the motor is usually situated below the deck and in this way it will be protected from excessive moisture, and this installation way save the space on the ship deck; horizontal capstan is mounted above the deck.

Classifications Of Marine Capstans

Electric capstan is a sort of small cost-effective winch used on the deck or on the shore for mooring and anchoring purposes. The rated load and pulling force are generally 0.5T to 50T. The speed can be single speed, double speed, and three speed depending on your requirements.

Vertical capstan uses a vertical shaft with the motor and gearbox situated below the unit, usually below decks.

How to choose the most suitable capstans?

First things first---THE POWER SOURCE

According to different power sources, capstans are divided into three types: electric capstans, hydraulic capstans and diesel capstans , with roughly the same structure. Electric capstans are widely used in internal combustion engine ships.Hydraulic capstans, also known as electro-hydraulic capstan, is driven by a motor to drive a hydraulic pump, drive an oil motor, and then run the windlass through a reducer (or without a reducer).Diesel capstans are suitable for places where oil is relatively cheap.(for some special applications,there are also some steam capstans as well)

Evaluate your ship capacity

Small and medium-sized ships are generally equipped with double sprocket horizontal capstan anchor winch; large ships, especially ships with larger bow deck widths, are more suitable for single-sided (single sprocket) horizontal casptans. Transport ships rarely use vertical anchor winches, but some ships should use vertical winches due to the small deck area that can be used to arrange anchor equipment, or when horizontal capstans are not suitable for other reasons.

Installation methods

Electric horizontal capstan is installed above the deck, so the installation is straight-forward and maintenance is easy. On the other hand, this means the motor is more exposed to the weather conditions.

With vertical capstan, the motor is situated below deck, thus the installation and maintenance is more difficult. However, you don’t have to worry about the weather, but you may have to worry about corrosion in the damp conditions of your anchor locker.
